We are a microcosm of the macrocosm

Because it is the right thing to do

The health of the environment is central to decisions made about materials used. The ancients described us as a microcosm of the macrocosm and were acutely aware of how our actions and choices impact the world around us. This connected view of the world is, I believe, our only hope of creating the change we need in the world right now to save and restore our precious and life-giving ecology.

There is nothing in heaven or upon the earth which may not be found in man, and there is nothing in man but what exists in the macrocosm of Nature.

PARACELSUS 1493 - 1541

Natural aromatics such as essential oils, absolutes, concretes and resins are at the heart of perfumes created for the Atelier Signatum collections.

We endeavour to purchase only sustainably grown and harvested natural plant materials. Sometimes we don't get all the answers we need, but in asking the questions along the supply chain we are part of a voice for a reduction on environmental impacts.

Sustainability in this age requires complex decisions and in this vein we complement our natural aromatics with natural isolates and clean and safe synthetic aromatic molecules. This enables the re-creation of certain aromas such as musks without using animal extracts. It also means that we can avoid using unsustainably harvested plant materials.

Other Plant Materials

Many of the plant materials used to make Archeus and Atelier Signatum products are grown organically and biodynamically in our own gardens.

Harvesting is done in harmony with the seasons and with lunar and planetary transits. Some materials such as leaf and flower are used fresh, others are dried or tinctured so we can use them at favourable times throughout the year.

Other plant materials are selected with forms of eco, organic and biodynamic certification and we avoid use of any ingredients that are not sustainably produced.

We do not use any parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates or other nasties that can harm human and environmental health.

Art Materials

Old furniture and other found objects are upcycled for painted furniture pieces. Non-toxic paints, dyes, varnishes and glues are used.

Giving Back

We are all made of the same stuff, the prima materia of nature and universe. Our actions ripple down the generations. To help create kinder ripples, we donate funds to organisations and projects supporting holistic and regenerative relationships with the natural world.
